Flat bones are thin, flattened and often curved
Parallel layer of compact bone with spongy bone layer between
e.g. the cranium, consist of a layer of diploe (spongy bone), lined on either side by
a layer of compact bone
Skull, sternum, scapula and ribs are examples
No shaft, epiphysis or marrow cavity
Flat bones serve as points of attachment for muscles and often protect internal
organs
