• A long bone has two parts:
• Diaphysis: is the shaft of the bone between two epiphyseal ends
• The hollow region in the
diaphysis is called the
medullary cavity, which is
filled with yellow marrow in
adults
• The walls of the diaphysis
are composed of dense and
hard compact bone
• Epiphysis: The proximal
and distal epiphyses are the
ends of the bone filled with
spongy bone.
Red marrow fills the spaces
in the spongy bone
• The medullary cavity is lined by endosteum, where bone growth, repair, and
remodeling occur
