Business require money in and money out to operate
The main goal in business is more money coming in than going out
The margin for the business is the difference between the money coming in and going
out
A positive margin is considered success, while a negative margin is considered failure
First rule of business: More money in than out a margin
Second rule of business: It takes money to make money
Third rule of business: “Nobody knows nothing”
When you have a positive margin…
In a for-profit business, it’s called profit
In a not-for-profit, it’s called a surplus
In the government, it’s called under budget
- You want a large margin to:
o Have a back fall/buffer
o Keep your interest rates down
o Pay back investors
Course definition of business: any endeavor or enterprise that achieves a goal through the
effort of a person or persons that involves a monetary component
Anything where money is involved
o A dollar value can be put on an action (mow lawn, wash car)
