Unit 1 – Introduction to Business
 The first computers introduced into businesses were made by IBM, 37 years ago (1981)
 Business require money in and money out to operate
 The main goal in business is more money coming in than going out
 The margin for the business is the difference between the money coming in and going
out
 A positive margin is considered success, while a negative margin is considered failure

First rule of business: More money in than out  a margin
Second rule of business: It takes money to make money
Third rule of business: “Nobody knows nothing”

When you have a positive margin…
In a for-profit business, it’s called profit
In a not-for-profit, it’s called a surplus
In the government, it’s called under budget
- You want a large margin to:
o Have a back fall/buffer
o Keep your interest rates down
o Pay back investors

Course definition of business: any endeavor or enterprise that achieves a goal through the
effort of a person or persons that involves a monetary component
 Anything where money is involved
o A dollar value can be put on an action (mow lawn, wash car)

*In order to run a successful business, YOU MUST TRACK EVERYTHING*
How do you run a business?
- What to track?
o Data
 How much did this material cost?
 How much did this equipment cost?
- How to track it?
o BP (before computers)
 Paper/index cards
