The material used to make a mark is called a medium.
When more than one are used we say media, not
mediums!
All media has a pigment and a binder.
Pigment – animal, vegetable, or mineral substance that
makes the color.
Binder/vehicle - The substance in a paint which holds
together (binds) the pigment and makes the paint stick
to whatever it is painted on. Such as linseed oil,
plastic polymer, gum Arabic (sap), milk, clay, bees
wax, eggs, etc.
, Ochre cliffs in France, early
pigments!
