, QUESTION 1
Q 1.1
It is important to understand and investigate the origins of words and the evolution of language in
general, especially if one is interested in how languages work, and understanding the world around
them, the origins of words can be fascinating. Etymology is a term used for the origin of a word, the
meaning of the word and the historical developmental of its meaning. By being aware of the
etymology of words can be a great advantage as it enhances perspective about their most effective
use. By taking the time to understand the original meaning of a word as well as how it has been used
in both the present and the past can increase one’s comprehension. By understanding etymology,
one will be able to differentiate between words that have similar uses or are closely related to each
other, this will allow one to choose the best word for each situation.
Language can be insanely complex. To unravel that complexity involves understanding why words
are used. It is important to understand the origins of words as one can instinctively interpret a word
that they have never heard before, it helps with translating between dialects and understanding the
reason for different connotations in different cultures, it can help one comprehend older documents
as well as improves communication between people across language barriers. By understanding the
origins of words, one can easily make connections between words.
Q 1.2
Standard English developed from the variety spoken in the area around London, this variety gained
prestige as it was the variety spoken at Court (used by royalty , other countries as well as those
associated with royalty) (G.Heinemann, 2014). Standard English is often the English used in grammar
books, news readers, presenters on the radio as well as television. Standard English form refers to a
fairly formal variety and is most common in its written form (G.Heinemann, 2014). Standard English
links many people and countries of the world through communication. An understanding of
Standard English will give one the confidence with their speaking and dialect. A good understanding
of Standard English will give one an advantage in exams, interviews, business, and life.
In contrast, the Non-Standard English form includes all the other varieties of English, such as local
vernacular forms; dialects that have lexical, grammatical and phonological deviations from Standard
English; and informal varieties that might include colloquialism and slang (G.Heinemann, 2014). In
simpler words, Non-Standard English is what most individuals use in their everyday life and is about
the place one was raised. Non-Standard English often stems from cultural identity, history and pride.
