SECTION I. True/False Questions [24 points] For each True/False question, please circle only one of the choices. No credit if both or none of the choices are circled. 1. A coffee shop can serve 120 customers per day at maximum. Then, the capacity of that coffee shop is 120 customers per day. True False 2. Consider a supply chain with the following four members: a factory, a wholesaler, a distributor and a retailer. According to the bullwhip effect, among all supply chain members, the factory has the smallest demand variability, and the retailer has the largest demand variability. True False 3. Consider a muffin baking process. Suppose that regardless of the number of filled muffin cups in a pan, it takes 30 mins to bake all muffins in the oven. Then, the total variable processing time per muffin batch is 30 mins. True False 4. According to the periodic-review base-stock policy, if a company would like to achieve a larger service level, the company should have a larger target inventory level. True False 5. On average, a patient spends 2 hours in a clinic. Then, the throughput rate of the clinic is 2 hours. True False 6. According to the process analysis, one way to increase the system capacity is to add resources to the bottleneck step(s). True False SECTION II. PROCESS ANALYSIS [40 points] 2 SAME IDEAS APPEARED IN SESSION 3 (EXECUTIVE SHIRT) CALCULATIONS, GROUP ASSIGNMENT #1, AND REVIEW SESSIONS #2 - #5 Question 1 (Batching) Cheers! is a local brewery that is famous of its tasty beer, and it operates 10 hours a day. After production, beer bottles are manually packed for shipping. Typically, 12 bottles are packed together in a box. It takes 1 minute to place each bottle in a box, and it takes 8 minutes to wrap the box and label it. (a) Please calculate the capacity of the packing step in terms of bottles/day. Batch size = 12 bottles Fixed time per batch = 8 min per batch Total Variable Time per batch = 1 min/bottle*12 bottles/batch = 12 min per batch Total Processing Time per batch = Fixed time per batch + Total Variable Time per batch = 20 min/batch 1 day = 600 minutes Then, in one day, 600/20 = 30 batches can be processed at the packing step. Because 1 batch = 12 bottles, capacity of the packing step is 30*12= 360 bottles/day. (b) If Cheers! actually packs 12 bottles per hour on average, what is the utilization at the packing step? Daily throughput rate of Cheers! is 120 bottles/day. Utilization at the packing step = Throughput/Capacity = 120/360 = 1/3 = 0.33 Question 2 (Process Analysis – Service) Ally Co. is a life-insurance company, and the company’s operation consists of the following three steps: Step 1: Data Review Department First, each incoming application’s data are reviewed. 70% of incoming applications have complete data while the remaining 30% of incoming applications miss some information. On average, it takes 10 minutes to review a complete application, whereas an employee spends 30 minutes to complete the missing information on an incomplete application and review it. There are three people that work in parallel in this step. 3 Step 2: Underwriting Department After the data review step, all applications are sent to the underwriting department to be rated. Amo
