Abstract
The English proficiency is one of the factor that determine a successful learning. Senior
secondary students need to master the English well since they will face the real life as
soon as possible. They will use English in their job or even for their advance study. But,
the problem appear when there is a fact that students in senior secondary school are still
in the very basic English user (A1). That is why implementing the problem-based
learning approach is a crucial thing since they need to think critically and becoming
active students. So, on how actually this PBL can improve or enhance students’ ability in
integrating the four skills in English will be answered by this paper. An example of
implementing PBL and also a framework of PBL approach will also be delivered.

Introduction
English in secondary schools has been a very crucial thing to be mastered. Since
English is very useful for communication, science, politic, and cultural purposes around
the world so it is necessary for every students to master English. But, nowadays, a
teacher from Jaya Krama senior high school Beringin, Sumatera Utara gave a fact that
English proficiency for senior high school students is not good enough. They can not
even introduce themselves well and it is worse when they are studying at home (online
learning) in this pandemic era (N.I. Pratiwi, personal communication, October 24, 2021).
More over, data taken from Education First shows that students in junior secondary
schools, or in the age of 13 years old, still have a very basic English proficiency. More
than 70% students in all over the world have a very basic ability in English (A1). When
they are starting to enter senior secondary school, they do not develop themselves in
English. Most of the senior secondary schools’ students are still in the basic ability in
using English (EF EPI,2020). From the data above, we can see that English is not
mastered well by the students, even they are already in the last level of the school. In
fact, students in advance class need to integrate the four skills (listening, reading,
speaking, and writing) in order to prepare themselves to the real world, some of them
might proceed to more advanced levels of English for job-related or academic purposes
(Brown & Lee, 2015). So, how the students can use English in a good way of
