Abstract
Students in this digital era are encouraged to regulate their own learning to make them becoming
successful in learning. Social media seems to be one of the appropriate platforms to facilitate
students’ learning, particularly English as a foreign language (EFL). Students especially in senior
secondary school are expected to be able to regulate their own learning through social media
with or without the help or guidance from other or the teachers (Saks & Leijen, 2014). However,
it is still not clear what type of social media would be appropriate for language learning of the
students or learners to engage in conducting their learning. Moreover, there are some activities
beyond learning possibly that may occur. Therefore, this paper is aimed at proposing the
appropriate social media to be used to facilitate students’ self-regulated learning in English as a
foreign language.

Introduction
Studies about social media in language learning have been drawing much attention recently as it
offers many benefits for language learners. The use of social media has widely increased among
people all over the world, and it is increasingly integrated in human’s every aspect of life
especially the learning aspect. Based on Statista (2020), the number of social media users in
2020 was approximately 3.6 billion which equals to 57.6 percent of global population. In
addition, Datareportal (2021) states that the number of social media users (from age of 16 to 64),
reaches 4.55 billion per October 2021. These two data show the increment of social media user
, every year. The most popular social media in 2021 among internet users are Facebook followed
by YouTube in the second place, and WhatsApp in the third place (Datareportal, 2021).
Undoubtedly, people in various ranges of ages in this 21st century era cannot be separated from
social media. Such social media have become tools or means for everyone to hold
communication each other with their families, friends, and colleagues. Moreover, in learning
context, it is utilized to build teacher and student relationship and communication outside the
classroom (Roohani & Vincheh, 2021).
Social media is seen as a potential tool to be integrated to learning (Matzat & Vrieling, 2016), as
it is easy to use and serves larger learning sources. It is categorized as the web-based application
connecting user with online resources (Evans, 2014), which serve much useful and important
information for educational purposes. The service and features such as audio, text, call, video
blog, and video messaging in different platforms of social media are varied. Whilst that is to say,
the learners have freedom and opportunities to choose their own preferred learning style with
various form of materials from social media (Lambton-Howard, Kiaer, & Ahmed Kharrufa,
2020). Social media such as Facebook help the students to understand the norms of having fiends
and sharing wall post (Junco, 2014). Moreover, in learning, it has the ability to promote learners’
participation (Santovena-Casal & Bernal-Bravo 2019) not only that, the students also can
regulate their learning.
Another important thing of using social media, which needs to be considered, is that the students
especially who are in senior secondary school can develop and enhance their self-regulated
learning. Self-regulated learning (SRL) is considered to be a notable competence in this 21st
century (Mooij, Steffens, & Andrade, 2014) and is also important in the context of higher
education, because it demands higher thinking and analysis (Kartika, 2015). Schunk and
Zimmerman (1994) mention that a student can be determined as a self-regulated learner if she or
he metacognitively, behaviorally, and motivationally involve and active in the process of
learning in order to achieve his/her goal. Self-regulated learning comprises the activity where
students monitor the effectiveness of their learning strategy, evaluate the appropriate way of
learning, and then span overt change by changing to the best strategy (Zimmerman, 1990).
Students in traditional way can facilitate the learning process by printed book, but in this digital
era the students can obtain the information they need from many sources including social media.
