The Air University Global College Style Guide
The Global College uses writing style guides based on The Chicago Manual of Style. The Chicago Manual of
Style specifies both a notesbibliography system and an authordate system for referencing works cited.
• The Air University Style and Author Guide (AU1) adapts the notesbibliography system for use in Air
University Press publications, research, and other documents for public release.
• This Global College Style Guide adapts the authordate system for less formal writing used in online
discussions and inclass assignments which are not intended for publication.
General Guidance
• Written work intended for publication or assigned in research courses (e.g., RESxxx/RE56xx), will
use the notesbibliography system explained in AU1, appendices A and B. Footnotes (or endnotes)
and a bibliography are required unless otherwise specified in assignment instructions.
• Written work submitted in all other courses (e.g., discussions, essays, final exams, etc.) will use the
authordate system as explained in this Global College Style Guide. Intext (parenthetical) citations
and a selected bibliography are required unless otherwise specified in the assignment instructions.

Using the Global College Author-Date System
In the Global College system, cite sources in the text of your paper, either in parentheses or as part of the
text itself. Include some combination of the author(s), date, and page number for all references. If you
incorporate a portion of the citation into your text, only the remaining information needs to be included in
parentheses. 1
1Important note: Footnotes and endnotes can still be used in the Global College format to provide clarification or
other information on a textual passage. Just don’t use them for citations.
