INTRODUCTION
A. Background to the Problem
Language is prior instrument of communication among human being in a
community. Larsen (2003: 2) states that language is a mean of interaction between
and among people. Here, it has function as a tool which connects them each other.
Language also facilitates the people to interact with surroundings. By getting
interaction, they can gain information, knowledge, and express feeling and emotions.
Nowadays, in globalization era, many people learn the international languages.
One of the international languages is English. English is an international language
which has an important role in communication by people to interact with other
people in the world. Harmer (2004: 13) states, “English was already well on its way
to becoming a genuine lingua franca, that is a language used widely for
communication between people who do not share the same first (or even second)
language”.
Every Vocational High Schools in Indonesia, based on the curriculum K13, the
English lesson for SMK (Vocational High Schools) aims at developing the
communicate competence in both spoken and written English through the four
developed skills of English, that is speaking,listening, reading and writing.
