What spiritual considerations surrounding a disaster can arise for individuals, communities, and health
care providers? Explain your answer in the context of a natural or manmade disaster. How can a
community health nurse assist in the spiritual care of the individual, community, self, and colleagues?

Natural and man-made disasters effect people both physically and emotionally. When disaster strikes it
remains nondiscriminatory, meaning it affects all people regardless of ethnicity, gender, or religion.
When disaster strikes, people of different faiths require nurses to be aware that people of different faiths
and culture react differently during traumatic events. As nurses we need to advocate for patients of faith
providing them with resources such as Rabi’s, Chaplin’s, priest, and so on to meet their emotional and
psychological needs. In addition to meeting the psychological needs of patients it is also important to use
assessment tools that are geared towords specific cultures and beliefs to help identify preferences in
regard to health care, in the event physical needs are needed to be addressed as well.

Watch the "Diary of Medical Mission Trip" videos dealing with the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in
2010. Reflect on this natural disaster by answering the following questions:

1. Propose one example of a nursing intervention related to the disaster from each of the following
levels: primary prevention, secondary prevention, and tertiary prevention. Provide innovative
examples that have not been discussed by previous students.

2. Under which phase of the disaster do the three proposed interventions fall? Explain why you
chose that phase.

3. With what people or agencies would you work in facilitating the proposed interventions and
why?

Primary prevention is the act of planning before a disaster occurs. Some examples of primary prevention
include familiarizing one’s self with local shelters and hospitals, having emergency supplies available
such as extra water, flash lights, and battery powered radio available. Basically, having an energy disaster
preparedness plan ready in the event of a disaster. The PHN can assist in the efforts by informing and
instructing families within the community on how to develop and implement a disaster preparedness
plan. Secondary prevention is when the actual disaster is occurring, requiring safety and survival. PHN
can also educate families of proper evacuation routes or safe place to take refuge in the event of a
disaster. Tertiary prevention occurs after the disaster, this entails the recovery of physical and financial
loss, rehabilitation for those injured, mental health treatments, and the reevaluation and preparedness
of current and future disasters. I believe the pre impact phase encompass all three proposed
interventions in most cases. When an impending disaster is predicted this allows hospitals, governmental
