Understanding the Self
Myself through the years...
One of the things that surprised me was how much has changed about me, particularly in
my behavior. I'm a little more vocal and lively now. At home, I have a new habit of attracting
attention. I'd dance and sing in front of my family, make silly faces, and imitate what they do and
say. To be honest, it annoys them, but sometimes they just go with it. I’ve become more
interactive with the people around me.
I suppose that my boyfriend is mainly responsible for who I am now. He exposed me to
his world, and fortunately for me, I was able to adapt. My senior high school friends and
classmates are the second cause for my transformed behavior. My friends are quite enthusiastic
and outspoken, so I somehow adapt the way they talk and act. My classmates, on the other hand,
reminded me that it's okay to say no sometimes. I was used to saying yes to every concern they
have no matter how big or small it may be because I want to help them but unfortunately, they
started taking me for granted. When I was in Grade 11, my classmates would always ask for
paper, which I didn't quite understand because they had fancy gadgets, backpacks, and makeup
but didn't have enough money to buy school supplies. I was fine with it even though I always
reminded them to buy their own things because they had enough money to buy nice things. As
time passed, I became more annoyed and angry over it. That's when I decided to say "no." Just
because I'm nice and helpful doesn't mean they should rely on me. I became stricter with what I
should say and act in front of them so they would also learn how to be responsible with their
studies.
I honestly think that I would still change in the future. I'm not closing the door on
discovering a new self and learning my abilities and capabilities' limits. I may change, improve,
or replace my current behavior, but I will always look back to who I was before. Because I
wouldn't be who I am today if I wasn't who I was in the past.
