NARRATIVE ESSAY
Religion and spirituality are both concerned with knowing and understanding the
purpose of life and, in certain situations, how a connection with the divine creator may
impact that meaning. While religion and spirituality share the same basis, they vary
significantly in the application. Religion is a structured, community-based faith system,
whereas spirituality is a personal belief. The cultural beliefs, rituals, and festivities of society
are highly essential for the reason that they serve to establish the identity of individuals who
participate in such activities. They are closely related to a community's perspective as well as
its view of its history and remembrance.
There are plenty of rituals in my town that our residents partake in. One of these is the
yearly commemoration of our patron saint, St. John the Baptist, which takes place every June
24th. Every year, the Catholic Church remembers John's birth by praying on his vital role as
Jesus' prophet. The celebration on that day honors John as a perfect image of what it means
to be a Christian. Another ritual practice in which our community partakes is Flores de Mayo
and Santa Cruzan, which are yearly festivals occurring in May. Flores de Mayo is one of the
Blessed Virgin Mary's May devotions that lasts the entire month. While Santa Cruzan,
known as a religio-historical pageant, takes place at the end of the month. Aside from these
rites, there are also Sunday Masses and various mass celebrations, one of which is the
Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo, which takes place during the Christmas season. Simbang
Gabi is thought to be a 9-day novena that, when completed, fulfills wishes which is why a lot
of the residents do participate in this event.
The purpose of rituals is determined by its context. Eventually, while there is
widespread agreement on the conceptual aspect of ritual, there is less consistency on the use
of ritual as spiritual. Ritual is frequently defined as a symbolic manifestation of actual human
situations, status, or an individual's role in society. Ritual is sometimes stated as relating to a
transcendent, spiritual reality as well as a community's ultimate ideals. These activities also
help to connect one individual to another, such as family members, friends, and members of
the community. It is continuously concerned with learning and comprehending the meaning
of life.
