Oral Tradition: __spoken history, passed down orally.__
Trade is the real reason for the development and rise of the great West African
kingdoms: Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. They are often referred to as the trading states
or trade kingdoms. Traditional religion coexisted with Islam. The kings, however,
were Muslims.
A. Ghana - relied heavily on the trade of gold and salt, declined because the snake didn’t get a
sacrifice
B. Mali - rose from the decline of Ghana and manas musa was one of the most famous kings in
Mali. They declined because there was no line of succession.
C. Songhai - Largest of the 3 kingdoms, they expanded their land by conquering land
from others. They declined because there were battles for the position of king.
Migrations to the South & East were caused by overpopulation of other areas. The
main group involved were Bantu Farmers. The descendants of the first wave of
migrants continued moving south, spreading their language & culture. Trade with
other areas allowed these city states to prosper.Over time, this led to the combination
of Arabic and traditional African languages. For example Swahili “of the coast”.
City-States & Kingdoms:
A. Great Zimbabwe - Great stone builders, falls because of the weakening gold trade
B. Ethiopia - one of the first christian kingdoms and resisted attack from muslims
and portugese
C. Meroe/Kush - very good place for trading, broke free from egyptians and moved south
to the nile river
