Describe the health and safety considerations associated with exercise
programmes and sessions (p2)
Explain the health and safety considerations associated with exercise
programmes and sessions (m1)
Poor technique Poor technique is when a skill or action is not used in its correct form. Weight
lifting could be an example as if an individual isn’t doing a lift in the incorrect way
then muscle strain could occur or more serious injuries could happen, such as
dislocation of the joint.
Incorrect Incorrect clothing or footwear is when a player is not dressed appropriately for
clothing or the session. An example would be long distance runner to wear jeans or tight
footwear fitting clothing which would restrict movement. Performers need to wear the
appropriate clothing to prevent any injuries and do the activity at their best. an
example being if a swimmer didn’t wear appropriate swimsuits, they would be
less streamline, meaning they would be slower.
Poor or broken Poor equipment is when the equipment to the appropriate standards. This needs
equipment to be known before any session to prevent any injuries. For example, if a weight
machine isn’t appropriately set up or checked serious injuries could occur.
Medical A common medical condition that can cause problems during exercise is asthma.
conditions and This needs to be considered when doing an exercise programme so adaptations
injuries can be made to suit the client. For example, if a person suffered from asthma
then, the exercise programme would be less strenuous and adapted to the client.
Also if a client is pregnant, then low impact training will be carried out such as
swimming. Depending on the severity of the injury and the placement, exercise
would be limited and different focuses for different joints.
Risk A risk assessment is a set of risks that have been known before any physical
assessments activity can be carried out, this can be a risk as small as a crack in the floor to a
broken piece of equipment. This is to prevent any injuries.
PAR-Q A PAR-Q is a questionnaire which should be completed before any physical
activity is carried out, this is the easiest way to find out a client’s background and
health. A PAR-Q is important to identify what physical activities the client can do
without the chances of injury.
