First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross in love with a girl named Martha. Blames himself on
the death of Ted Lavender because his mind was on
Martha and not his team. He also felt guilty about
the death of Kiowa because he decided that they
spend the night there and not higher up. He is going
to write a letter to the dad of Kiowa.
Martha The girl where Jimmy is in love with. Gave Jimmy
cross a picture of her at the reunion because he
burned the others in the war.
Henry Dobbins Strong, big and kind men. Wore his girlfriends
pantyhose. Loves people and munks.
Dave Jensen Practiced field hygiene. Had a fistfight with Lee and
broke his nose. Felt bad and broke his own nose. Felt
relieved that he didn’t had to kill Lee. Sang lemon
tree while getting the pieces of curt lemon off the
tree.
Lee Strunk was in the tunnels while they blew it down. Had a
fistfight with Dave Jensen who broke his nose. Stand
on a rigged mortar round and lost his leg till the
knee. Not much later he died in Chu Lai.
Ted Lavender Adopted a dog which was later killed by Azar. Was
shot in the head when he came back from peeing.
Mitchell Sanders Thought that the death of Kiowa is Jimmy Cross’s
fault. Told Tim about how Rat got hurt. Carried dead
bodies down a mountain together with Tim
Norman Bowker Dad only cared about medals. Wrote a destructive
letter to Tim where he wrote everything which is
stated in speaking of courage. He has a lot of trouble
with dealing with what happened in the war. He had
no one who would listen to him. He eventually hang
himself. Normans friend max drowned in a lake.
Norman could have saved kiowa but he couldn’t
handle the smell so he had to let go of kiowa’s shoe.
He was in love with Sally but she married someone
else when he was gone.
Rat (bob) Kiley The medic of the group. Very smart and takes risks
to help others. Rat was goofing around with Lemon
just before lemon was blown in a tree. After that out
of sadness he hurted and killed a baby buffalo. He
also wrote a letter to the sister of curt lemon but she
never answered. However rat’s mind went crazy in
the night life that he saw pictures of organs and
dead bodies in his head. Eventually he shot his own
foot and he was send to Japan.
Kiowa Religious kid who doesn’t swear. He is very kind to
others and likes to help people out. He died because
he drowned in the shit field. Norman bowker tried to
save him but he couldn’t. kiowa was digged out the
shit field which means that his mates cared a lot
about him.
Tim O’Brien Main character of the book (and wrote it). Met
, Jimmy Cross after the war. Has a daughter, Kathleen.
He had run away from home because he was scared
of the war. He stayed at Elroy’s place for 6 days
where he felt guilty and eventually went to war. Tim
was best buddies with Rat Kiley. Tim peeled of curt
lemons body of the tree. Tim killed a 20 year old
men out of the fog with a grenade because he was
scared. Tim also had a letter from Norman Bowker
which hit hum (speaking of courage). In total Tim
was shot twice. One with rat Kiley on his side. The
other with Jorgenson who took 10 minutes to come
to him. Tim almost died due to shock and is but had
rotten away. He was send to a saver place where he
took revenge on Jorgenson which azar took too far.
Timmy (younger tim) was in love with Linda. He
went to bed earlier when she had passed away
because they met again in his dreams
Azar Naughty young boy in war. Loves teasing and
goofing around. Is quite mean tho. Took the revenge
of Tim too far
Kathleen Daughter of Tim. Very curious and smart kid
Elroy Berdahl The men where Tim stayed for 6 days at tip top
lodge (close to the border of Canada). A really kind
old men
Curt Lemon The best friend of Rat Kiley. He died while he was
goofing around with rat and stepped on a rigged 105
round. He was torn into a tree. Tim and Dave Jensen
peel off all the pieces of his body from a tree.
Eddie Diamond Head of the medical detachment
Marry Anne Bell Girlfriend of Mark Fossie. Very curious about the war
and the medical detachment. Felt in love with
Vietnam. Eventually grew away from Fossie, lived
with the greenies and alone in the forest. Gone crazy
Mark Fossie Young medic. Flew in his girlfriend. His girlfriend
completely changed and he lost her.
Max Friend of Norman Bowker who drowned in the lake
Sally Kramer Crush of Norman Bowker who married someone else
while he was in war.
Bobby Jorgenson The new medic after Rat Kiley. He was really scared
in the first fight and forgot his skills. Almost let Tim
die due to that. He got stronger and more connected
to the group overtime
Linda Crush of Timmy. Died due to a brain tumor at 9
