MFiore_TASK 1- NURSING-QUALITY INDICATORS.
Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 1 A. Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators According to the National Hospital Quality Measure, "Indicators focus on clinical actions or outcomes of clinical care (Cherry & Jacob, 2011)." Clinical indicators are measurable to disclose if patient care meets the requirements of standard practice. When identifying goals of quality improvement and process improvement, it is crucial to use resources such as flowcharts and Pareto charts. These recourses utilize general rules when measuring clinical indicators. All processes analyze and create a clear understanding of the process, select key aspects of improving, establish trial targets, collect and plot data, interpret results, and implement improvements. In Mr. J's scenario, it is essential to begin by identifying what we are trying to accomplish. First and foremost, patient safety should be our priority. Mr. J is at risk for falls, and skin break down secondary to restraints. The next thing that needs to be accomplished is patient satisfaction. Patient satisfaction can be achieved by catering to Mr. J's food preferences. The clinical leader will need to take responsibility in identifying the process of patient safety and patient satisfaction and review flaws in the current procedures. Once the process is evaluated, specific measures can then be in place to ensure a mental and physically safe environment for the patient. It could have been identified that Mr. J was drowsy due to the medications. Mr. J was not violent and did not need physical restraints. Mr. J was unable to relieve pressure from bony prominences while in bed, then leading him to a possible pressure injury. There are other alternatives to restraints when providing care to a nonviolent patient at risk for falls secondary to medications.
