Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership A1 Compare the US Healthcare System with the Healthcare System of another country Upon researching the countries Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Japan I chose to compare Japan’s healthcare system to our US healthcare system. Both countries require citizens to be signed up for insurance, but Japan offers public primary coverage that is universal, versus the US that only offers public insurance to the low income population, causing employers and employees to not only pay high premiums and deductibles, but also be responsible for insuring the low income population via taxes. In my opinion, Japan’s healthcare system is superior to the US’s healthcare system. A2 Compare Access between the two Healthcare Systems for children, the unemployed, and retired. In the US, children of low income families qualify for Medicaid or an equivalent public program offered at the federal-state level. Most undocumented immigrants are not eligible to receive public healthcare, however, some state governments will provide coverage to undocumented pregnant women and undocumented children. In Japan, all documented residents are required to sign up for a public health insurance plan, so all documented children have healthcare. Japan does not offer any insurance coverage for undocumented persons, period. The unemployed citizens in the US can be covered by Medicaid or Medicare, depending on if they meet state requirements for the programs. Some even qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare. In Japan, as stated above, all citizens are obligated to sign up for public health insurance, so unemployed citizens are covered at a lower premium. Medicare covers US citizens over the age of 65 for hospitalizations and doctor visits. If a supplemental program is chosen by a Medicare participant, prescription drug coverage will be included.
