Used when pharmacological treatment is not responsive b. Who is a candidate? i. Suicidal Pt ii. Pts who have rapid cycling iii. MDD disorder/Schizophrenia spectrum disorders/Acute manic episodes c. How does it work physiologically? i. Subdues extreme manic behavior especially when pharmacological therapy such as lithium has not worked ii. Seizure activity produced by ECT may enhance the effects of neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine & norepinephrine) in the brain d. s/s – maybe not eating much, poor hygiene, used for melancholy, someone who doesn’t meet ADL, anhedonia, withdrawn, takes over entire body e. frequent ECT will affect the memory, short and longer term. May not come back 3. Medical conditions that mimic MDD (ATI p. 69) a. Medical condition - hypothyroidism 4. Depression risk factors (ATI p. 70) a. Family history b. Previous history c. Sex – female i. Twice as common than in males ii. Affects btwn age 15-40 d. Older adults over age 65 e. Neurotransmitter deficiencies i. Serotonin deficiency 1.
