Cloelia Translation My name is Cloelia. I am a small, Roman girl. I am a ten years old girl. I lived in Rome for ten years with my mother and my father. I was always happy in the ten years. The ten years I was safe and never in danger. Now I am in great danger I am afraid, but however I am a Roman girl. I cannot cry. Roman citizens are strong. Roman citizens are not afraid of danger, but they fight. Roman citizens are bold. Roman citizens do not run during danger, but they do very bold things. I am also strong. I am also bold. I will not cry. I will fight. I am in the enemy’s camp. The father and the mother are not in the enemy’s camp. Now in the city, I am not with my father or my mother, but I am in the camp with the enemies. Why am I in the enemies’ camp? I will tell you the entire thing. I am now a captive in the enemy’s camp, but I was living in the city with my mother and my father. I love my mother and my father and I want to see them. My mother’s name is Valeria. My father’s name is Quintus Cloelius Siculus Vocula. My father is a great man, but he is quiet. My mother is not quiet, and she always tells me stories. The stories pleases me. When I was at home, I wanted to leave the house. I was wanting to do great things, just like in the stories. Roman girls do not do great things. Roman girls always stay home and ought to make clothes. Once upon a time at home, My mother and I were making clothes. Lucretia, a friend of my mother, also was making clothes with us. She was a good woman, and she always was telling me stories about good deeds. Making clothing does not please me. I was always wanting to hear the stories about good deeds. “Mother, I wanted to hear the stories.” “And what stories you wanted to hear, Cloelia?” my mother said. “The story about a girl who does not make cloth.” My mother and Lucretia laughed. “I will tell you the story about that Camilla.” Lucretia said, and she began to tell this story. Once there was a man, who had been the king of the city, but the citizens did not want the king and expelled the man. The king oughted to escape out of the city. The man was having a baby daughter. The name of this daughter was Camilla. The man escaped and came to the river. The water in the river was really fast. “The water in the river was really fast.” The father said to himself. “The fast water is in fear of the baby. With the baby, I cannot go across the river!” Suddenly, the father got a plan. The father has a spear. He tied Camilla to a spear. The king made this vow: “Diana, goddess of the woods and virgins, protect my daughter! I will give you my daughter. My daughter will always be a maiden and will protect chastity!”And so the father sent the spear with the baby across the river! Did Diana hear the king’s vow? The father went across the river and saw the riverbank. The safe baby was on that riverbank! The baby was not dead and was not in danger, but she was living and laughing. “Oh my daughter, you are safe!” the father exclaimed. “Diana protected you! A friend of Diana will always be with you. She always protects chastity, and you do not want men.” The father of Camilla did not break his vow. When that she was, she was living with her father in the forest. She never ought to make clothes. She was strong, and she was bold. Just like soldiers she was fighting with a sword and a spear. She was wanting no men, but she was always a virgin like Diana, and she protects chastity. “Camilla was strong and daring! I want to live in forests and to fight with a sword and a spear! I am strong and I do not desire men!” I shouted. Lucretia laughed. “Cloelia, you did not hear this entire story.” When the enemies came to Italy, Camilla was wanting to save Italy. She brought war against the enemies. She was strongly fighting for Italy. She killed many strong men with a sword and a spear. All of the enemies were seeing her and were fearing her. But suddenly Camilla saw a man, who brought splendid clothing. She saw this splendid cloth and wanted them immediately. “I never saw such splendid clothing, I need to have it!” Camilla said to herself. The strong maiden quickly went to the man. One of the enemies saw her and sent a spear into her. Because Camilla did not see him, she is dead. The spear of the enemy killed her. “Oh Dear!” Poor Camilla!” I shouted “Cloelia,” said Lucretia, “Women ought to make clothes, not wars. They are more pleased with their splendid cloth than death and war. Women ought to be at home, and men ought to bring war. “Clothes do not please me!” I shouted “Do you want to go through the city naked?” My mother said, “The clothes certainly pleases me!” We were all laughing, but soon I was not laughing, because death came to Lucretia and war came to the city. Afterwards, I was making cloth again with her mother. Suddenly, the father came quickly to us “Oh dear! There will be a war.” “What?” said my mother. “Why will there be a war? What did you say?” “Sextus, son of the king, committed a big crime, and the king did nothing. Sextus gave no punishment. We expelled the king and the ring will give the on and punishments.” “Which made the big punishment?” “Lucretia, friend of ours, is dead.” “Ah! AH! Oh Dear!” my mother shouted and began to cry. “Did Sextus kill Lucretia? Why?”

Cloelia
Translation
My name is Cloelia. I am a small, Roman girl. I am a ten years old girl. I lived in Rome for ten years
with my mother and my father. I was always happy in the ten years. The ten years I was safe and never in
danger.

Now I am in great danger

I am afraid, but however I am a Roman girl. I cannot cry. Roman citizens are strong. Roman citizens are
not afraid of danger, but they fight. Roman citizens are bold. Roman citizens do not run during danger,
but they do very bold things. I am also strong. I am also bold. I will not cry. I will fight.

I am in the enemy’s camp. The father and the mother are not in the enemy’s camp. Now in the city, I am
not with my father or my mother, but I am in the camp with the enemies.

Why am I in the enemies’ camp? I will tell you the entire thing.

I am now a captive in the enemy’s camp, but I was living in the city with my mother and my father. I
love my mother and my father and I want to see them. My mother’s name is Valeria. My father’s name is
Quintus Cloelius Siculus Vocula. My father is a great man, but he is quiet. My mother is not quiet, and
she always tells me stories.

The stories pleases me. When I was at home, I wanted to leave the house. I was wanting to do great
things, just like in the stories. Roman girls do not do great things. Roman girls always stay home and
ought to make clothes.

Once upon a time at home, My mother and I were making clothes. Lucretia, a friend of my mother,

good deeds. Making clothing does not please me. I was always wanting to hear the stories about good

“The story about a girl who does not make cloth.”

My mother and Lucretia laughed. “I will tell you the story about that Camilla.” Lucretia said, and she
began to tell this story.
