CLASS PROFILE (GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE GROUP):
Overview
The group consists of 14 adults, with the youngest being sixteen and the oldest is 47. All are Ukrainian
speakers/nationals; some speak Russian as well. They study at a private language school in Kiev, the capital and
a major urban city in the Ukraine. All but two (Valeria and Kate; 16 and 18 years old) are professionals, ranging
from financial managers to lawyers to retired classical pianists: they are a sophisticated and intelligent group of
language learners. According to another candidate who is also a long time teacher at the school, about 30% of
the class have been attending lessons for several months. They are polite, attentive, yet at the same time they
expect to receive useful input. These students have just begun studying together as a group, although a few
know each other by name from a previous course they have taken at this school. They study at night, from 6-
8PM. DELTA candidates alternate, with one teaching for one hour, and a five minute break between classes.
Group Dynamics
As a group I feel that they have not quite jelled together tightly. This could be due to the fact that several started
attending later in the week, after the class formally began. Four students also regularly arrive late. Another
reason could be that they have not had enough time together yet to really get to know each other, and certainly
each student is unique; all have varied life experiences. Would they ever meet for tea in a café for a chat if not
for this class? In terms of proficiency these students are all in the same general range of upper intermediate
proficiency, with some, perhaps due to personality type, more confident and vocal than others. In terms of
literacy skills, all of them are weaker at writing than speaking and would benefit from thoughtful writing
activities. As a foreigner, I cannot discern if they differ great in socioeconomic status; I can say that they all can
afford to study English.
Needs
One thing of significance I noticed was that these students know on some level that they need practice in basic
skills, such as third person singular and spelling errors, but they seem to prefer lessons that offer them novel
grammar, systems and skills, perhaps because they feel repetition on the small errors is not worthy of lesson
time. Student goals appear focused more upon improving their spoken English –the working professionals have
said that they have to communicate orally in English with native English speakers and non-native English
speakers for work and travel reasons. No one has asked for specific help with writing yet. Likewise, the younger
students (Kate and Valeria) see English as necessary for their future careers and travel plans, as well as for
entertainment and curiosity purposes. The younger students, Valeria and Kate, have said they like to listen to
music in English.
