D2- Summarise ways of improving their own communication and interpersonal skills in
future interactions.
During the group interaction I communicated with different health care professionals to go
over Mr Neil Downs care plan. I interacted with a counsellor, oncologist and an urologist.
Throughout the interaction I played the health care assistant role and listened to what they
all had to say. After assessing how they communicated with one and other and me I will
assess how well I think they communicated and how I think they can improve their
interpersonal skills in future consultations.
Counsellor
Within the conversation I think the counsellor put across good but brief points about how
much counselling Neil should receive and topics to discuss with him. I think the counsellor
put across her views but could have mentioned more about the counselling being provided.
As what will happen during the counselling sessions was not mentioned. I feel like if this was
mentioned I and the other professionals will be able to say if we think that the sessions are
being used effectively. But I think the counsellor done a good job in going over the dates of
the sessions and how many there are. I think the counsellor could improve their
interpersonal skills next time by speaking up more having more of a say in the discussion
about Neil. Because if she was to have more of a say the other professionals can hear her
concerns as well. They could have also worked on their body language better but their solar
was spot on with good eye contact. But they could have used gestures to help express their
views.
Urologist
I think the Urologist played a key role during the care Neil was given and during the care
plan discussion. I feel like they took control and went over and disused all the topics of the
care plan in depth with me and the other care professionals. The Urologist spoke up
effectively and made sure everyone had a say in what was going into the care plan. However
I think the Urologist could have mentioned medication that Neil will be on in more detail.
But apart from that I believe the Urologist done a great job at writing and speaking about
the care plan. To improve their communication skills next time I think they could of worked
on discussing their concerns. Because they didn’t mention or consult with any other
professionals their concerns about Neil as a person. I think their interpersonal
communication was great but could have used more eye contact to see if everyone
understands.
