Case Study: Biological Macromolecules & the Brain (4 pts)
Purpose:
Case studies look more closely at how a topic covered in class applies to issues in the “real world.” This case
study will introduce you to the 4 major biological macromolecules first discussed in Chapter 3. In this case
study, we will also explore forensic DNA analysis and a “cold case” that was recently solved through DNA
analysis. We will continue to discuss the structure and function of the 4 major biological macromolecules -
lipids, carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) - throughout the quarter.
o These assignments will help you think more critically about the news and other media you consume on
a daily basis.
o The case studies will help you to explore various topics within the field of cell biology and healthcare.
o You will skillfully analyze the information that you receive and assess that information. Critical
thinking is a life skill and it is the starting point for understanding yourself and the world around you.
o These assignments will benefit you in a professional setting because employers value employees that
