the ability to curb the power of the other branches. This system of checks and balances has
prevented and corrected excesses of power but also led to instances of gridlock in the federal
government.
Develop an argument that explains whether the system of checks and balances has hindered or
benefited the national policy making process. In your essay, you must:
Articulate a defensible claim or thesis that responds to the prompt and establishes a line of
reasoning
Support your claim or thesis with at least TWO pieces of accurate and relevant information:
o At least ONE piece of evidence must be from the U.S. Constitution (including
amendments)
o At least ONE piece of evidence must be from Federalist No. 51
Use reasoning to explain why your evidence supports your claim/thesis
Respond to an opposing or alternative perspective using refutation, concession, or rebuttal
Thanks to the system of checks and balances created by the framers of the constitution we don't
have to worry about unequal representation in the government and abuse of power amongst
elected officials. The national policy-making process benefits from having a system of checks
and balances in our government, the system guarantees that our policies will ensure the will of
the people, uphold that all men are created equal, and aren't racially biased or discriminatory.
Each policy may have to go through each branch of the government making this process arduous
but, it reaps great rewards not just for the people of the United States but the policymaker
themselves. While the policy goes through each branch it can be tweaked or fixed before being
made official, this allows that policy to become greater than that person could imagine or take it
in a direction that person may not have thought of. To ensure that the will of the people is
expressed and that democracy is maintained, the US Constitution provides a dynamic,
competitive policymaking mechanism. It does this by dividing powers between the three
branches of government and between the federal government and state governments, as well as
ensuring that by checks and balances in the policy-making process, no single part of the
government may become too dominant. Madison claims that the division of government powers
into separate and autonomous branches would force them to compete with each other in order to
rule, because citizens are inherently self-interested, thereby reducing the influence of the
government as a whole. The constitutionally defined structure of the US government
intentionally complicates policymaking, forcing multiple divisions, agencies, and individuals to
work together to achieve goals. The Constitution also offers alternatives for indicting
(impeaching) persons who commit crimes or misuse their positions of office and, if necessary,
replacing them. These initiatives help to ensure that the will of the people is reflected by
allowing multiple citizens to control the process of policymaking, as well as protecting freedom
by restricting government authority.
