1. What is the essential cultural observation or situation being satirized? What clues lead
you to this conclusion?
a. Throughout his piece, ‘A President Candidate’, Mark Twain is satirizing on how
many presidential candidates do everything within their power to hide things in
order to maintain a ‘clean’ image to the public. What clue me in and led me to
this conclusion was how Twain satirized on this and began confessing to every
one of his wrong-doings, no matter how long ago or how small.
2. What rhetorical strategies does the writer use to achieve the satirical effect? List them,
and explain how each is used.
a. Irony - Twain uses Irony in his piece to allow his points to be even more
effective. He is obviously not going to run for president, and he’s hopefully never
done any of the things mentioned. However, he uses the ironic sense in his piece
to place emphasis on the presidential candidates who do in fact, tries to hide
every bad thing they’ve ever done from the public.
b. Hyperbole - Throughout this piece, Twain uses a lot of Hyperbole to exaggerate
his speech. He made up events such as burying his dead aunt or killing his
grandfather, using it as shock value and exaggeration to place emphasis on the
presidential candidates who have truly conducted misdeeds they are trying to
cover up.
3. What is the social change for which the writer might be calling? Is this change
achievable? Does the writer, through satire, imply any suggestions?
a. With his piece, Twain is suggesting for the Presidential Candidates to be more
transparent with the public. Rather than hiding all the misdeeds they attempt to
cover up, come clean earn the public’s trust as a leader.
