TRAINING PROGRAM FOR JACK
Obesity: Diet vs. Exercise
Jack has 36% body fat, which is considered “seriously obese” by the American Society for Metabolic

and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) . He needs to lose substantial amount of weight. Weight gain occurs
when the amount of calories consumed exceeds the amount the body uses via biological functions,

daily activities, and exercise . It can be caused by a variety of factors, including overeating, lack of

physical activity, chronic sleep loss, certain medications, and stress .
, Caloric restriction is central to weight loss as it creates the metabolic energy deficit required to lose weight

. While exercise helps promote modest weight loss, exercise without caloric restriction has not been
shown to provide significant enough weight loss to combat obesity unless it is vigorously performed for
extended periods
