M3- Assess the effectiveness of data transfer over wired and wireless networks:
A report to Louisa Antoine assessing the effectiveness of data transfer methods over wired and
wireless networks written by Chloe Beckett on the date 10-02-16:
Introduction:
In this report, I will be assessing the effectiveness of data transfer over wired and wireless networks
and producing a comparison of both networks taking into account the following factors:
Ease of setting up- how easy is it to set up both networks?
Usability- how easy are both networks to use?
Reliability- how reliable are both networks to use?
Speeds when in use- are both networks fast or slow when they are used? Why may this be
the case?
Costs- are any costs involved or not?
Pros- what are the advantages of both networks?
Cons- what are the disadvantages of both networks?
At the end, I will also be producing a conclusion to summarise what I explained about in this
report and a bibliography stating which sources I may have used to gather information.
Section 1- Brief recap of my 4 activities:
As part of P8 for this particular assignment, I had to choose and carry out 4 activities out of a
list of 7 on both a wired and wireless network. When I performed my 4 activities on a wired
network, I used the college computers, but when I performed them on a wireless network, I
used my home computer- my broadband provider Sky offers Wi-Fi; so in order to carry out
my chosen activities at home, I needed to connect to Wi-Fi on my computer by going to
“Network and Sharing Center”, then typing in the password in order to connect to the
network “SKY48996”- which is my home Wi-Fi connection. The 4 activities I carried out on
both network types are:
Instant messaging- this involved using a social networking site’s instant messaging service
(e.g. Facebook, Twitter) to send private messages.
Email- on the wired network, I sent an email on my college email account, but on the
wireless network, I sent an email on my personal email account.
Social networking- on the wired network, I opened Twitter, but on the wireless network, I
opened Facebook.
Desktop sharing- this was the only activity I performed on both network types at college.
What this activity involves in general is enabling both remote access and collaboration on
somebody else’s desktop. The two main types are remote login and real time collaboration.
Section 2- Assessment of data transfer over wired and wireless networks:
1. Wired:
As a brief introduction, a wired network is a type of network which only works with cabling.
They make up a huge percentage of all Internet connections because of their reliability and
how easy and simple they are to install and set up- which is one benefit of wireless
