Topic the word or phrase that everything in a text refers back to. How to identity topic? look for repeated words or phrases. What do Support Details do? provide evidence and back for the main point. Where are supporting Details most found? Informative & Persuasive text 6 Types of Supporting details 1) Descriptions 2) Vocabulary 3) Proof 4) Voices 5) Explanation 6) Importance Descriptions: the writer can use the five senses, comparison, and metaphors to help paint a vivid picture for the reader. Vocabulary ocabulary helps with clarification Proof often made up of facts, statistics, and dates that are hard evidence for your main point Voices "Voices" are expert quotes, individual opinions, or different perspectives that can be considered "soft proof." Explanation Explanation is restating the main point more simply, and "importance" is answering the question "so what?" after a fact or a quote. importance answering the question "so what?" After a fat or a quote What do topic and summary sentences do? and where is it located? They encapsulate the main idea of a text and it is usually placed at the beginning of each section. Paraphrasing Putting into words the ideas or feelings you have perceived from the message What should a summary include? - Main characters, events & places - The overall purpose of the piece of writing - shorter than the original text Inference a piece of information that is implied but not written outright by the author What to look for when making a correct inference? contextual clues Inference a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. What does making an inference help with? - can enrich your reading by helping you read between the lines for the author's intent. - can also enrich your writing by helping you paint vivid pictures without stating the facts directly What does identifying a logical conclusion do? can help you determine whether you agree with the writer or not. How do you identify a logical conclusion? combine the information given by the text with what you already know Implication things that the author does not state directly, but readers can assume based on what the author does say. What is implied? (implication) I stepped outside and opened my umbrella. By the time I got to work, the cuffs of my pants were soaked. The author never states that it was raining, but this fact is clearly implied. Explicitly the reader is told by the author exactly what is meant, which can include the authors interpretation or perspective of events. Explicit: something that is stated plainly Implicit something that is implied and not stated directly. When do you use explicit information? scientific and non-fiction (because its clear and unmistakable) When do you use implicit information? in fiction
