historical events was the tearing up of cedulas. Why did the Katipuneros tear their
cedulas? Your explanation should be based on the readings above.
Cedula is a piece of paper that symbolizes the Spaniards’ oppression and tyranny
against Filipinos who were enslaved for more than three hundred years under their rule.
Andres Bonifacio ignited the tearing of cedula to his Filipino comrades, a sign of fighting
for freedom and independence. Its historic significance to us consists of the realization
that the Filipino people had finally realized the lasting value of freedom and
independence and the need to fight in order to prove themselves worthy to be called
a truly free people. Katipuneros tore their cedulas, signifying their protest against
Spanish colonial rule. It signaled the start of the Philippine revolution against Spain that
was followed by series of fierce fighting of Filipino bolos and spears versus Spanish
muskets.
2. For some, it may not make a big difference if the start of the revolution was August
23 or August 26, 1986; nor will it matter that much to know the exact spot where it
happened. However, historians and history enthusiasts will be among those who will
keep the debates alive. What do you think is the importance of historical accuracy?
History is important to know why the present events are happening since the current
state is the result of the developments and events of the past. An inaccurate history will
result to an incorrect answer to why the world is like it is now. This signifies that the future
will be uncertain since we are also uncertain to the choices and consequences made
in the past. Further, incorrect readings of the past can lend support to ideas or beliefs
which don’t actually have a historical basis. Such misinformation about the past can
provide people inaccurate assumptions about the world around them.
Much of our understanding of history, and the stories presented to us, do not accurately
describe actual events in the past just like what happened in the accounts of
Katipuneros having misleading places for the start of revolution. Historical accuracy will
greatly contribute to understanding our present and is vital to know what really
happened and why did that event happen. The misconceptions and misinformation
about the past which is prolific in modern times lends support to inaccurate
understanding of our present world, but hopefully the diligent study of and reporting
on accurate and correct accounts of the past will help us finally understand the true
nature of our here and now.
