White collar crime:
-Usually not violent
-Usually committed for financial gain, and usually committed by upper class white men who are well
respected
-this type of crime has very low public awareness. Media tends publicise more violent crimes
because they are considered news worthy and not crime committed by upper class white men.
Examples of white collar crime include: fraud, tax evasion and crimes related to money.
The typical victim of this type of crime is someone who has funds to invest, can be retired people.
This type of crime is both deviant criminal – against the law and the norms of society.
CASE STUDY EXAMPLE: Bernie Madoff
-Bernie was a businessman, and a part of a Ponzi scheme in which investors believed their money
was being paid into funds to make money but instead it was not.
Moral Crimes:
- they are crimes against the normal norms of society.
Examples include: prostitution, under age drinking, illegal gabling and drug use.
- There are no victims of this crime, victimless.
- The perpetrator and the victim can also be the same person of crimes like under age
drinking.
