To obtain a stool specimen, ask the patient to catch some stool in a container
suspended in the toilet bowl, in a bedpan, or in the plastic wrap draped on the
rim of the toilet bowl. Transfer a small amount of stool to the appropriate
container for a culture or a test for ova and parasites (O & P) or onto cards for
the occult test. Maintain aseptic technique when collecting specimens for
culture and sensitivity.
Before collecting body fluid or other potentially infectious material, verify the
primary care provider’s order and complete the correct laboratory requisition
form. Next, label the specimen container with the patient’s name and medical
record number. Place the label on the container itself, not the lid because
once the lid is removed in the laboratory, the specimen would be unlabeled.
Don gloves and explain to the patient what is needed. Then collect the
specimen without contaminating the outside of the container. Apply the lid,
ensuring it is fully tightened. Clean or disinfect containers that are visibly
contaminated before placing them in the laboratory transport bag. Place the
secured laboratory specimen container in a plastic specimen bag and close the
bag lock seal. Complete the laboratory requisition form and place it in the
envelope pocket on the outside of the transport biohazard bag before leaving
the patient’s room. Both OSHA and the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act
(CLIA) require that specimens be transported to the laboratory in a PLASTIC
BAG MARKED “BIOHAZARD.” Remove gloves, perform hand hygiene and then,
following facility protocol, send the specimen to the clinical laboratory for
processing.

Empty the bladder into the toilet and begin timing the collection of the
specimen.
For the next 24 hours, add all urine to the collection container.
Keep the container ON ICE or REFRIGERATED if instructed to do so (depends on
the laboratory and the type of test ordered).
When the 24 hours is up, empty the bladder and add the urine to the collection
container.
Seal the collection container and return it to the laboratory or the primary care
provider’s office as directed.
