Geospatial Lab Application 3.1
Georeferencing an Image
Question 3.1:
Just by visual examination of the two maps, what types of transformative operations will have
to be performed to the unreferenced map to make it match the source map?
Find several control points on the unreferenced map on the source map, and match them.
Question 3.2:
Why is this a good location for a control point?
The reason is that the point is an intersection point that can be easily found and located, and it is
not likely to change overtime.
Question 3.3:
Which locations did you choose for the next two control points, and why did you choose them?
I chose two points that are near the two borders on the source map (intersection between
Carlton Ave and Audubon Street, and intersection between 5th Ave and West Wood Street), so
when the application matches two maps, it is easier to exactly scale, skew, rotate and translate
the source map.
Question 3.4:
Why would you want to spread the control point selection across the image instead of clustering
the points together?
The reason is that clustering the points together will make one section of the map well-
referenced, but the rest of the map may not fit well.
Question 3.5:
Which location did you choose for the fourth control point, and why did you choose that
location?
