Discussion Topic: The Electronic Health Record and Data Quality
1. After reviewing the examples of the electronic health record (EHRs) and simulations in
Unit 3, identify how the EHR helps improve data quality.
2. Review the various data elements that were collected in the demo simulations that you
reviewed and how or if they would be gathered in the CDI program developed in the Unit 4
assignment.

How EHR helps improve data quality
EHR helps enhance the quality of data in various ways; With EHR, patient's and medical
information is accurate, complete, and always up-to-date, meaning no errors, confusions of
patients’ data can occur (Kruse et al., 2017). This creates confidence in medical prescriptions,
treatment diagnosis, and safer health care. Data can be accessed efficiently and easily in a press
of a button.
Data stored in EHR is highly secure; thus, unpermitted disclosure of patients' data cannot
occur; neither can intentional corruption of data be done without notice. This enables highly
reliable and secure health care provision and improves productivity and meeting efficiency goals.
EHR improves quality through a controlled system of data entry. With this system, only
the essential and needed data can be entered into the records. This ensures that unwanted, minor,
and useless data does not pile up and cause confusion.
EHR ensures standardization of data, thus improving its quality. With standardization,
data is strategically stored and with internal consistency; thus, a patient's information can be
accessed at ease in the same content and format, and without errors of confusion of other
