, Relative Legislation That Applies to Farmed
Animals:
• The Animal Welfare Act 2006 – this applies to all animals that are kept within a captive
environment, even those that are bred to be slaughtered for food purposes.
• The Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations 2007 – specifies that in order to
comply with this regulation, farming facilities must abide by: Detailed rules for the care of
different species, correct breeding procedures, providing wholesome feed and access to
water, equipment properly maintained, protection for animals kept outdoors, appropriate
buildings/accommodation, allowing freedom of movement, recording of medical treatmen
and mortalities, regular staff inspections of the animals, and the number of competent sta
• The Welfare of Animals at Marketing Order 1990 – this covers the correct treatment of
animals within markets, including the requirements for penning, food and water, and care
young animals.
