, 1. Computer practical PET

Introduction
A PET scan is a type of imaging examination that can show the biochemical or metabolic
activity of your tissues and organs. As a result, it may be used to diagnose illnesses as well as
monitor the body’s changes over time (1).
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a form of medical imaging in which tiny quantities
of radioactive particles, known as a radioactive tracer, are used to make high-resolution scans
of the body’s tissues and organs. The radioactive tracer is injected into the patient’s
circulation, where it produces short energy bursts in the form of positrons as it circulates.
These positrons then collide with electrons in the body’s cells and tissues, causing gamma
rays to be emitted. A PET scanner detects these gamma rays and creates detailed pictures of
the radioactive tracer’s distribution throughout the body. (2-3).
PET scanning is used to detect and monitor a variety of medical problems such as
neurological disorders, heart disease and cancer. It can also be used to assess the efficacy of
therapies like chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
PET scans are very detailed and provide vital information which other imaging techniques,
such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT), do not provide. It
is also utilized in conjunction with a CT scan to provide comprehensive anatomic information
as well as functional information from a PET which is referred to as PET-CT scan (4).
The aim of this practical was to get more knowledge in PET scan and analyses, distinguishing
a growing tumor myself and having the ability to look at PET images and to learn from this.

Materials & Methods
In this study, the mice were injected with tumor cells in their left and right lateral flanks. The
injected activity (Zr-89) labeled antibody targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor
(EGFR). We were given PET images of the mice at the following time points: 4h, 24h, 48h,
72h, 96h and 120h after injection of the tumor cells.
The half-life of Zr-89 was 78.4h
The mouses were injected with 99.9 uCi (injected activity) for mouse 1 and 98.3 uCi for
mouse 2.
The body weight of the 2 mouses were also presented to us with mouse 1: 36g and mouse 2:
34g. The decay corrected mean blood pool activity was also given to us for each mouse at the
different time points.
Calculations were also made for the decay correction, TB ratio and SUV. The time-versus-
SUV and time-versus-TB ratio plots were created using hours and mean tumors.
I only used data from mouse 1.
