Negative Freedom (passive)
freedom from

classical liberalism; theorists include John Locke, Thomas Hobbes

supported by liberal theorists who don’t think the state should intervene in the private
sphere (generally classical liberals)

the individual is taken as an egotistic, autonomous, and self-conscious entity.

civil liberty is the absence of government interference in or control over economic life

the role of the state: provide safety and security to protect the private sphere (but not be
involved in it)

individual liberty is still the ultimate end

protection from the state and other individuals
