values, and the Bible. In light of the material in Box 10.2, discuss how the DSM aligns
and contrasts with social work values and the scriptures.
Please be specific about both biblical and social work values (use the
presentation Social Work Values and the Bible) in your discussion post and peer replies.

According to the Social Work Values and the Bible presentation the six social
work values are: Service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, Importance of
human relationship, integrity and competence. When comparing these values with the
information from box 10.2 there is not anything that aligns with each other. In fact, every
value does not align with the social work values in the bible.
My first example would be the importance of human relationship. With the DSM
there is not any day to day work with consumers (Segal,2013, p. 300). With the lack of
interaction between consumers and the DSM writers it makes it hard to understand
what people are going through and understanding their emotions and behaviors.
Next, is dignity and worth of a person. I feel that it is the one value that is the
most important. It is also the one value not being taken into consideration most. People
are judged by the DSM writers based off their marginalized groups (Segal, 2013, p. 300)
and as if all people are the same. Being able to have the dignity to know the worth of a
person is the biggest factor in helping someone.
Social justice definitely isn’t being taken into consideration in the DSM. As it was
discussed in the social work and values presentation, social justice is helping people
who are poor or struggling. When discussing the DSM, it even states A loss of a job or
relationship is not taken into consideration for exemption for mental illness. If the DSM
truly cared about social justice, they would take into consideration life changing events
and understand grief is a normal emotional reaction instead of a mental illness.
Diagnosing somebody with a mental illness can cause problems with future work or
even create a label for that person.
Integrity in social work was described as demonstrating that love or worth of a
person. However, with the DSM it is not really demonstrating that, it is putting a one stop
quick response to all mental problems, not as looking at each individual. Then
competence, as Philippians 1:27 States, “whatever happens, conduct yourself in a
manner worthy of the gospel of Christ “. The DSM in my opinion does not do that. I
know God would not judge people as one unit he judges based off each individual
person
Finally, service, serving one in other in love. The DSM is not meant to serve in
love it is meant to make diagnosing mental illnesses easier not helping each individual
people.
