CASE STUDY Peter’s Pasta recently entered into a collective agreement with DIWUSA (The Difficult Workers Union of South Africa). The agreement prescribed specific procedures for resolving grievances and taking disciplinary action. Peter hoped that his union problems would be a thing of the past. However, it seems that the signing of the agreement was only the start of his problems. When he got to work this morning at about 09h00, more than 200 production workers were on strike, and they were singing and toyi-toying on the grass. The Labour Relations Manager informed Peter that the workers refused to talk to management without their union being present. They did, however, hand him a letter in which certain demands were made: Oppressive management regime We demand that the following be done before we return to work. 1. We demand a 20% wage increase with immediate effect. 2. All overtime should be banned immediately. 3. Workers want a reduction of working hours from 45 hours to 40 hours per week for the same pay. 4. Ben Best must be dismissed immediately because he is a racist. 5. Management should stop disciplining employees who come late because the bus service cannot ensure that their busses arrive on time. Peter became very angry after reading the letter and called all managers to his office. He believed all the strikers should be dismissed immediately, but the production manager said that it would not be possible at this stage. He explained that they were busy producing a big order of pasta for a very important customer, and that it would be better to try and get the workers back to work as soon as possible. He also reminded the others that it would take weeks to train new employees to perform the jobs in the factory. 1. You are the employment relations manager at Peter’s Pasta.
