In order to prescribe and order in state of Texas, an APRN should have a
prescriptive authority number from Texas Board of Nursing. In order to obtain DEA
license in state of Texas, an individual have to submit the application through DEA
official website or by calling there office number. The APRN must have a prescriptive
authority number than has been issued by the Texas Board of Nursing before submitting
the controlled substance registration form (Texas Board of Nursing, 2013). Also, an
APRN can call the BON and they can assist the applicant with applications and
information regarding the prescriptive authority only. APRN will also need an agreement
with a collaborating physician, physician signature, and location where APRN will
practice. The DEA number takes about 60 days; however, many times APRN receives
tend to receive the number early. The registration fee is about 25 dollar.
Prescribing Schedule II Drugs Under Delegating Physicians
Once the Advance practice registered nurse (APRN) has a valid license and valid
prescription or DEA number, he or she is eligible to order and prescribe controlled
substance in state of Texas. Although, there are few requirements set by Texas
Department of Public Safety and by United States Drug Enforcement administration such
as:
1. Prescription for controlled substance from schedules III through V that also includes
a refill of that specific substance drug should not be no more than 90 days.
2. Once the prescription of that specific controlled substance has reached more than 90
days, the physician should be consulted before giving more refills for schedules iii
through V and should be charted properly in patient regarding physician consultation
was done prior to refilling.
