Instructional Module for the Course
PPATH 3305 – Mycology
Module 1
Topic 1 Introduction to Fungi
Objectives
1. Discuss the characteristics of fungi present in different ecological areas 2. Classify major
groups of fungi based on their respective Phylum
3. Identify fungal phylum based on their morphological structure
4. Differentiate and distinguish definition of terms in taxonomic classification of fungi and the
types of species
What is a fungus?
o A eukaryotic, heterotrophic organism devoid of chlorophyll that obtains its nutrients by
absorption, and reproduces by spores.
o The primary carbohydrate storage product of fungi is glycogen. o Most fungi have a thallus
composed of hyphae (sing. hypha) that elongate by tip growth
Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) the “Father of Taxonomy”
“ Minerals exist; plants exist and live; animals exist, live and sense.”
Plants without obvious sexual organs were classified in Class Cryptogamia (lichens, fungi,
mosses, ferns)
Fungi are primitive plants under this classification of organisms.
Modern Classification
At least 7 kingdoms are now recognized: 1. Eubacteria
2. Archaebacteria
3. Animalia
4. Plantae
5. Eumycota
6. Stramenopila (Chromista),
7. Protoctista (Protozoa, Protista)
Kingdom Fungi
Phyla: Chytridiomycota
Zygomycota
Ascomycota (inc.Deuteromycetes)
Basidiomycota
Kingdom Stramenopila (Chromista)
