Apple announced over a year ago that it was making a separate music
streaming app just for classical music, distinct from the existing Apple
Music app which was expected to arrive in 2022, but so far nothing has
materialized. Despite this, the project may still be alive as its existence
continues to be referenced in beta code. Apple is attempting to tackle
how computers struggle to accurately categorize data; for example,
asking Siri to play "pop hits" and having it play Katy Perry followed by
Billy Idol and then Elvis would likely cause an exasperated groan. Prime
phonic, founded in 2017, boasts of having the world's largest classical
database at 230,000 albums, with over 3.5 million tracks. The main factor
behind this is human intelligence; for instance, one Beethoven piano
Concerto could have 500 recordings that need to be curated and
narrowed down in order for them to be meaningful.
Speculation has been growing about the potential release of a new
classical app in a future iOS update, a move that wouldn't be
unprecedented for Apple. Last year saw the launch of the free-form
Whiteboard app, and 2016 saw the release of Music Memos.
Alternatively, Apple could surprise us all and have this new app show up
randomly in the App Store.
