NURS 8210: Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Through Technology
Credits
5 credits in 12 weeks
Walden University assigns credit hours based on the number and type of
assignments that enable students to achieve the course learning objectives.
In general, each semester credit equals about 42 hours of total student work
and each quarter credit equals about 28 hours of total student work. This
time requirement represents an approximate average for undergraduate
work and the minimum expectations for graduate work. The number and

Course Description
When used effectively, information technology can support generation of
new knowledge and emerging information technologies. In this course,
students examine the critical appraisal and use of information technology in
advanced nursing practice.
Students work toward gaining the skills and knowledge to process and
manage information systems/technology resources in consumer, clinical,
and public health settings. Students engage in a variety of discussions and
assignments designed to provide practical application of content on topics
including retrieval and critical analysis of digital data to support healthcare
quality improvement; electronic health records integration and evaluation;
and Web-based learning and intervention tools to support
,and improve patient care. They also explore ethical, regulatory, and legal
issues as well as the healthcare standards and principles for selecting and
evaluating information systems and patient care technology.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:
• Examine the role of nursing informatics competencies and the
professional standards on nursing informatics practice
• Evaluate the technical and nontechnical issues connected with
implementation of technology in health care
• Analyze the importance of professional health care information
standards and interoperability of clinical data and the major
initiatives under way to promote standards
• Justify the need for evaluation and the role of organization stakeholders
in system selection and design
• Synthesize the ethical and legal implications of information technology in
health care
• Propose appropriate use of emerging information technologies to
