Characteristics of the wine country/ -area

Veneto, Italy

Italy has some of the world oldest wine-producing areas. The oldest one is located in Toscana which is
established in the year 1141. Today you can find Castello di Brolio from this area. Italian wines are
known in the whole world for their huge variety in wines. Also, Italy is, because his volume of wine
production, the world’s largest wine producer. The 45 to 50 million hector litres wine production per
year in Italy is one third of the global production per year.

Italy is a peninsula with a long shoreline, this contributes to a moderating climate for the wine regions
along the shoreline. The many mountains and foothills in Italy give many height differences for a variety
of climate and soil conditions. So also a variety for grape growing. The grapes are grown in nearly all the
areas in Italy. Almost one million vineyards are under cultivation. These vineyards are home to more
than 2000 grape varieties. Italy has 20 wine areas.
These reflect to the 20 provinces of Italy.

The wine region we choose is Veneto. Veneto is
located in the north of Italy. This wine area is famous
for Venice. It is the city built on sea water. Veneto is
also very old; already in the Roman time this area was
growing loads of grapes for wines. Because of a wine
production of almost seven million hectolitres per
year, Veneto is the biggest wine region in Italy. The
production of this big amount of wine is divided over
78.000 hectare soil. The wine production is famous
because of his quantity, but also from his quality.
These days Veneto has even 24 D.O.C.-wines and 3
D.O.C.G.-wines. D.O.C. means that Italy has to deal Figure 1: Veneto area in Italy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veneto
with strict rules about wine-making. Such as the (TUBS)

permitted grape varieties and a limited yield per hectare. The ‘G’ in D.O.C.G. stands for guaranteed.
With this classification, they have to satisfy the same strict requirements as with the D.O.C.
classification. But in addition the D.O.C.G.-wines must be tasted. This high level of qualification only

exists in Italy and Spain. Veneto also has 8 IGT-wines. This means that the area also makes and exports a
big amount of cheaper and easy drinkable wines instead of having only quality wines. In Veneto you will
find almost every type of wine: from young white and red wines, to a big amount of sparkling wines and
substantial red wines. White and red wine are almost equally divided in the production. Veneto
produces 55% white wines and 45% red wines. The most important grape varieties for the white wines
are: Garganega, Trebbiano and Prosecco. For the red wine, the most important grape varieties are:
Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, Molinara, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Nero.

Veneto has 2104 sun hours per year. The average temperature is 13,4˚ Celsius in this area. The climate
is soft and joyful, this is because of the influence of the sea and the mountains in the neighbourhood.
This mountains will keep most of the wind away.

The soil of Veneto consists mostly of sand. It lets water trough easily and produces fine and rich wines.
The roots of the vines will not get fed-up with too much water because of the sand letting the water
through easily.

Description of the chosen wine

Bellussi Prosecco D.O.C. vino Frizzante

This wine is produced by Bellussi and the winemaker is Francesco Adami. It is named Bellussi because of
a specific pruning method named “Bellussare”, which has been used for several centuries. The price of
the wine is approximately nine euro`s. For this wine is the Prosecco grape from Veneto is used, it is
grown on a clay soil in a Mediterranean climate. The vinification process used with this wine is called
‘Charmat method’. It is named after a French engineer named Eugene
Charmat who patented this method. The method is quick and efficient
and therefore lets the grape contain it`s primary tastes and also it is a
rather cheap method of wine-making. Before this was invented, the
only way to make wine was the ‘Champenoise’ method, where the
wine is yeasting in the bottle. In general Prosecco wines are stored for a
short time before it is being sold. This Prosecco has a D.O.C.
classifications, which stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata
(Controlled Designation of Origin). This means that the grapes that are
used for this wine can only come from a certain region, otherwise it
wouldn`t be classified as D.O.C. but as an I.G.T. or Vino da Tavola.
When the wine is opened the first thing you hear is a ‘plob’, this is
because there is CO2 present in the wine. Because all the pressure is
inside the bottle and wants to go outside, you hear the well-known
‘plob’ sound. Even though this is only a frizzante, which means lightly Figure 2: Bellussi Prosecco

sparkling, there is enough pressure inside the bottle for this well-

known sound. The smell of the wine is very pronounced, from the rt_product_id=75&virtuemart_category_id=31

moment on when you open the wine, you can smell the fruity
Prosecco. When you pour the wine into a glass you can see that the wine is transparent and light yellow
of colour, when you swirl the wine in its glass it is visible that the wine has legs. It has rather thick legs
and that is because there is an alcohol percentage of 11% present in the wine. When smelling the wine
you`ll discover that it is a fruity smell, with a little bit apple in there. The taste of the wine confirms that
