Question 1
Those leading change in organisations need to make key decisions around the way
in which the change process will be managed. John Kotter developed one approach
to manage change in an organisation. Apply the change model of John Kotter to the
change process focused on safety that was initiated and lead by Ms Cynthia Carroll
as CEO of Anglo-American plc for the period 2007 to 2013. In your answer, you
need to explain each step of Kotter’s model and then explain the application thereof
to the case study. (25 marks)
Tip: In addressing the question, students must first understand what is change, how
is it achieved and if there are any process/ steps involved. In chapter 8, Botha and
Venter (2022:245) mentioned Kotter`s eight-step change process.
Change is a process that has many steps.
Therefore, change process steps must be followed religious for change to be
achieved.
Kotter, a leading expert in change management gave 8 steps as follows:
[Chapter 8; page 245]
i. Establishing a sense of urgency
This phase requires leaders to establish a need for change and create a
sense of urgency around the need for change.
In terms of strategy implementation, not changing would be a threat or a
hindrance to the continued success of the organisation, and employees will
have to be convinced of that to create a sense of urgency.
Case application: The shutting down of the mining complex in
Rustenburg such that infrastructure can be assessed, and employees
retrained.
ii. Creating the guiding coalition
A guiding coalition is a group of individuals with the requisite knowledge, skills,
and attitudes to drive the change in the organisation.
