COUNSELOR EDUCATION UNIT FIELDWORK MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
This manual provides information and requirements pertaining to fieldwork for learners in the
Counseling Department Master’s Programs in Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family
Counseling/Therapy, School Counseling, Addiction Counseling, and Addiction Studies.

This first section of the CEU Clinical Manual contains general information about fieldwork
policies and requirements that pertain to learners in all programs. The Addenda include
specific program requirements. Learners are expected to be familiar with all current
requirements, policies and practices related to fieldwork.
CLINICAL ROLES IN THE COUNSELOR EDUCATION UNIT
Capella University provides a supportive structure for the practicum and internship experiences
through arrangements with a number of people in clinical roles. These clinical roles include the
Counselor Education Clinical Coordinators, Site Supervisors, Online Fieldwork Course
Instructors (also referred to as the Faculty Supervisors), Program Chairs, and the Chair for
Fieldwork and Licensure.
Counselor Education Clinical Coordinators
The Counselor Education Clinical Coordinators are faculty in the Counselor Education Unit
(CEU) who support learners during the fieldwork application process and work with learners to
establish practicum and internship sites. The Clinical Coordinators are responsible for
reviewing and approving fieldwork sites and site supervisors to ensure the quality of the
clinical fieldwork experience and to document that sites and supervisors meet the standards of
Capella University’s Counselor Education Unit and designated accrediting bodies. The Clinical
Coordinators verify all information, provide information about CEU program expectations and
responsibilities, and facilitate the site supervisors’ enrollment in Capella’s online Community
of Counselor Education Supervision site.
Fieldwork Site Supervisors
The fieldwork site supervisor is an integral member of the fieldwork experience who provides
a key role in facilitating a successful field placement experience. The site supervisor provides a

valuable service to Capella learners, the community and the profession. Site supervisors are
approved by the Clinical Coordinators based upon a review of their qualifications and other
information they have provided as part of the fieldwork application process to assess their
ability to meet program fieldwork requirements and to provide the experiences that will
support the activities required in the learner’s program. Site supervisors do not receive any
stipend or remuneration from Capella University for providing supervision to learners at their
fieldwork sites. The role of site supervisor includes the following:
Ensures that learners review and are familiar with the fieldwork site’s policy and
procedure manuals, including all processes for dealing with emergencies and all safety
procedures.
Provides orientation materials and experiences that familiarize learners with the
placement’s mission, objectives, and client population.
Provides live supervision of learners’ counseling sessions and/or reviews learners’
recordings of counseling sessions
Provides counseling training and direct experience in counseling individuals, couples,
families and/or groups
Arranges for learner involvement in appropriate staffing, administrative, planning, and
information/training meetings held at the site.
Provides suitable office and clerical assistance to facilitate completion of
documentation and secure storage of case notes, files and other confidential materials.
Communicates regularly with the Capella fieldwork course instructor regarding learner
progress, concerns, and/or suggestions for enhancing the field placement experience.
Serves as a professional role model for the learner.
Meets with the learner face-to-face for a minimum of 1 hour per week for individual
supervision totaling a minimum of 12 hours per each 10-week quarter.
Reviews, approves and signs the learner’s weekly activity logs and verifies the
accuracy of all time logs, including the Quarterly Summary of Fieldwork Hours log.
Provides input into the learner’s final course grade by completing and approving the
Site Supervisor Learner Evaluation by the end of each quarter.
CACREP requirements for Site Supervisors
Capella’s Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and Marriage and Family
Counseling/Therapy programs are accredited by the Counsel for the Accreditation of
Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). These programs meet the standards
set for fieldwork experiences set by CACREP, including the qualifications required for Site
Supervisors.
Site supervisors must have the following qualifications:
1. A minimum of a master’s degree in counseling or a related profession with equivalent
qualifications, including appropriate certifications and/or licenses. The Department of
Counseling requires that site supervisors hold current licenses/certifications to practice
independently in their states; please review the Program Addenda for more information.
