“Global Democracy and Democratization in Indonesia”
• The Journey of Democracy
Changes in the political order to a more democratic direction occurred on a large scale in
Indonesian society after successfully overthrowing the New Order regime which lasted more
than 30 years with authoritarian leadership.
Indicators of democratization in Indonesia are the closure of the New Order regime, elections
with high participation and participation by various parties, decentralization and regional
autonomy, amendments to the 1945 Constitution, desacralization of the presidential institution,
justice for corrupt officials, strengthening of civil society.
However, on the other hand, indicators of democratization in Indonesia have been achieved,
there are counter negative conditions, namely:
- The occurrence of conflicts between elites
- Major internal political party conflicts
- Violence
- Gangsters committed by political actors, religious leaders, apparatus
- Horizontal conflicts such as brawls.
This condition provides a fairly unequal distance to the civilizing process, even though this stage
is the initial step towards democratic politics. The social order that occurs actually leads to a
tendency towards one direction between frozen democracy and political involution.
- What is Civil Society?
This term refers to urban people who have been touched by advanced civilization. Furthermore,
the definition of civil society has developed, namely a society that already has autonomous
institutions to balance the power of the state. Another term for civil society is also called civil
society or civil society.
From the various definitions referred to as civil society, in essence the concept means the
creation of social order, community autonomy over the state and the rule of law, which are
three things which are vehicles for democracy in society. It should be remembered that
democracy is not the goal of society, democracy is a way to achieve justice and social welfare
needed by society.
In the process of democratization the most visible problem is social chaos, this occurs when
public participation experiences an extraordinary surge but on the other hand state institutions
are not ready to deal with this. Sorensen introduced the concept of frozen democracy, which is a
depiction of a society situation in which a budding democratic political system withers due to
various existing constraints. There are four indicators so that it can be said that a frozen
democracy has occurred, namely:
1. The economy at the local to national level is experiencing sluggishness.
2. The process of civil society has stagnated
3. The existing political consolidation does not produce solidarity
