Exploring Innovation in Action: The Changing Nature of the Music
Industry
Can you map the different kinds of innovation in the case study? Which were incremental and
which radical/discontinuous? Why? Give examples to support your answer.
In an industry in which musicians can be heard is through the process of signing a record
deal with a record company. Signing with a record company gives the musicians the ability to
connect with their audience with this comes the following obligations. A record company will
have the legitimate ownership to everything the musician has including the material they write,
any pre-recorded music, musicians creativity and the record company will also take a percentage
from the musicians touring and recordings. As for all the fans that truly love their musicians they
will go purchase music by going to a retail store and buying the CD while they have them in
stock. When it comes to purchasing a CD today most of those are the artist who are all well
known all over the country but what about those who are up and coming artist. Fans will always
find a way to reach those unknown artist thanks to technology.
Technology has made buying and selling records a thing of the past. Today music is now
done digitally where fans all over the world can stream music and download it directly to all of
their portable electronics. The today fans can have the ability to use their smartphone to
download all of their music perhaps just the one song from the CD. The innovation of the digital
world has made the future easier for people. Today we can purchase a new car with the
innovation of Bluetooth capability and USB slot that you can store all of your favorite CD music
or any music that you have downloaded to your MP3. The innovation of having different ways
of choosing how you can obtain a CD of your favorite artist.
