Social Responsibility and Stonyfield Farm (graded)
After watching the video on Stonyfield Farm answer this question: “The responsible thing to do is to identify and examine every potential for doing
good and make some kind of investment there.” How has the company’s CEO set about to improve his company according to these words, and
what remains to be done?

provides additional information.

This will assist as you attempt to respond to the discussion question
And here is a broad question……What impact might social responsibility have on the efforts of an entrepreneur?

As you look at social responsibility and entrepreneurs you can see that entrepreneurs taking on social responsibility seem to thrive. People
seem to expect new businesses to be responsible. Many times starting a "green" business can save you money in the long run. Using led bulbs
high efficiency appliances and recycled materials may cost more initially but the savings you can gain from them in a year or two can pay them
off. Other businesses will donote either profit or product to different organizations, which may lower profit but at the same time draws in more
customers usually macking up the difference from lower margin on goods.

Well I think any business owner or company is expect to have certain social responsibility to the community they reside in and to their
customers. I think everyone that buys a product expects that product to be safe for us and as eco friendly as possible when being made also
giving back to the community and the environment as a whole in donating to charity. These thing may hurt the pocket of a an upcoming
entrepreneur but only for a little if he lets it he can use these thing to show the public of the good things his company does and this gives
the company good publicity which in turn creates more revenue.

I feel that an entepreneur can have a very positive impact on the comunity. Small businesses are usually much friendlier, more willing to
help, and have the opportunity to financially bring up neighborhoods. They seem to be more likely to be involved in schools and parks in the
area, especially if the business is owned by a younger couple with small children. I have seen older business owners participate in assisted
living homes and funds that help the aging people in the community, this also is a way of improving the neighborhood.

Dona,
I have to agree with you i think that a lot of the small businesses where i live are all involved with the community and the age of the
owners does depend on what they participate in although that is not always the case. I was working for this little restaurant here in
town, it only employed five people including me and it was ran by a mother and son, so things they did really depended on which one
of them was being involved. The mother had a soft spot for single moms and for little boys so she tried to be involved in activities that
were benifical to that group.

Social responsibility has a huge impact on entrepreneurs. A social entrepreneur is a person who pursues an innovative idea with the
potential to solve a community problem. These individuals are willing to take on the risk and effort to create positive changes in
society through their initiatives. The main goal of a social entrepreneur is not to earn a profit, but to implement widespread
improvements in society. However, a social entrepreneur must still be financially savvy to succeed in his or her cause.

There are many areas that would impact an entrepreneur when thinking about implementing a socially responsible model.
Recently, there have been a lot of grumblings in the news regarding the wages that many of the workers overseas (Read: China)
are subject to. Apple Inc and its supplier, Foxconn, were under the gun with the working conditions and the pay scales that were
being used. For a while it seemed that Apple attempted to dodge the blame by pushing it as an 'outsourcing' problem, but it seems
that is no longer a valid excuse. The fact that Foxconn was contracted out by Apple to produce various components and assemble
them, laid the blame squarely at Apple's feet. Now they have implemented changes, upped the employee pay and other steps in
order to be a little more socially responsible.

While this is a large corporate entity, the same will translate to a small business owner. The fact that many suppliers are sourced
from overseas, could lead to the same issues that Apple encountered. Even though it is on a much smaller scale, this example can
still apply.

The impact social responsibility may have on the efforts of an entrepreneur can motivate entrepreneurs to be more conscious of their
individual impact on the environment and can cause them to implement ways to sustain their prosperity and take care of the
environment and their employees while they make money. With the focus on social responsibility becoming more prevalent, more
entrepreneurs will probably implement social responsibility as a norm for their businesses.

The efforts of an entrepreneur to behave in a socially responsible manor may be the foundation of his business. Stonyfield was a great example
of that. They produced a great natural product, but in doing so they also broke away from tradition by looking after their suppliers (the
farmers). They gave the supplies what they needed to ensure the consumers got what they wanted which was a natural organic yogurt.
The world is filling up with people and the way things were done in the recent passed is done in a much more conscientious manor. Today, boy
scouts are being taught to Leave No Trace when they go into the wilderness. The idea is if every scout left one piece of trash behind, it would
not take long to make an unsightly mess. If every boy took a rock from a park home, how long would it take before the park would have
dangerous and poorly maintained paths. The idea behind Leave No Trace is to bring home what you brought and leave what you didn’t.
Leave no trace teaches boy scouts to behave in a socially responsible manor. To our young and growing consumers, they will want to know more
about where a product came from and if all parties treated equally.
Leave No trace is penetrating the commercial world probably for good reason. It is hard for a business to leave no trace, but a company like
Stonyfield is likely to leave a lesser trace than most of its competitors. I think that is very important to the consumer and to the health of the
business.
