Rwandan Cultural Communication Rwanda is a small, landlocked country located in East Africa. It is known for its picturesque landscapes, rich culture, and tragic history. One of the most significant cultural communication patterns in Rwanda is the use of indirect communication. Rwandans typically avoid direct confrontation or criticism in favor of more subtle, less direct forms of communication (Mayersen, 2015). All these cultural communication patterns in Rwanda and the desire to maintain harmony and avoid offense have been significant factors in the development of indirect communication, proverbs, idioms, Ubuntu, the importance of family and community, and the history of violence and conflict (Blair & Fletcher, 2010). Communicating indirectly is also a way to show respect, especially to elderly people and authority figures. This paper will explore specific cultural communication patterns and practices in Rwanda and how they connect to the country's history, values, and beliefs.
