1. What is the purpose of palliative care?
To promote comfort and quality of life in life threatening illnesses.
2. Describe the purpose of and services provided by hospice.
Pain control, providing support to family and the patient, symptom management, psychological
and physiologic interventions to optimize comfort the patient.
3. Describe the physical manifestations that occur in the various body systems with approaching
death. What psychologic manifestations might you also assess?
Cardiovascular system- Increased heart rate; slowing and weakening of pulse, irregular rhythm;
decreased blood pressure
Respiratory system: Increased respiratory rate; Cheyne-Stokes breathing pattern (alternating
periods of apnea and deep rapid breathing; Inability to clear secretions; noisy, congested
breathing (termed death rattle)
4. Explain the process of grief and bereavement at the end of life.
Grief is the normal reaction to loss, is a powerful emotional state that effects all aspects of a
person’s life. Bereavement is the period following the death of a loved one (state of loss)- grief is
experienced during this period.
5. Define death and the controversies that arise regarding the definition when technology is
capable of supporting cardiovascular and respiratory function. Also, research the definition of
death in their state and if nurses can pronounce death in certain circumstances.
Death is when all vital organs and body systems stop functioning. Is irreversible cessation of
respiratory system, cardiovascular system, and brain function.
Now death is only pronounced when ALL brain function has stopped.
6. Describe and compare the grief stages as identified by Kübler-Ross and the grief wheel.
Differentiate adaptive grief from maladaptive grief.
